On August 13, 2026, a bit after 10 at night, I had just finished work at my office in Paltan and was heading home. I had my expensive laptop with me. I got off at Mohammadpur bus stand and started walking toward my house. It is only a five or six minute walk from the bus stand, behind Mohammadpur Thana, to reach home.
On this way, I suddenly bumped into a man. I did not do it on purpose, but the man came and bumped into me himself. Then he said he was carrying illegal cocaine and that it fell and spilled because of the collision. He said if I did not pay him for it, he would beat me up.
While he was saying all this, another man was walking by. He asked the first man, “Bhai, how are you, any problem, should I call people nearby?” The man replied, “No, no need, I am handling it.” And with that, he sent the passerby away.
After that, he threatened me and demanded money. I did not have any cash with me, so he forced me to take a loan through bKash and took four thousand taka from me. I could not say anything at that moment. Partly because I had my laptop in my bag, and partly because I was scared. The man who passed by also did not help me at all.
I have lived in Mohammadpur since 2019, but this is the first time something like this happened to me.
Honestly, this country feels like it is falling behind more and more when it comes to safety. This is probably one reason why good students go abroad to study and never come back.
Because of all this, I have started thinking that if I ever get a good opportunity abroad in the future, I would leave. Because when your own safety is not guaranteed, how can you protect your child.
